Building sisterhood through shared experience.

Sisterhood is a feeling of deep connection, support, loyalty, understanding, and belonging between women and girls, even when they are not biologically related.

It is the feeling of knowing that somewhere, somehow, there are women who see you, understand you, and make space for you to exist fully without judgment.

Sisterhood creates safe spaces.
Spaces where women can be vulnerable, honest, soft, loud, uncertain, emotional, ambitious, or simply themselves.

A lot of times, sisterhood does not come from the women you are related to by blood. It can be formed in schools, communities, workplaces, friendships, societies, and even in passing moments between strangers.

Sometimes, sisterhood looks like bonding over shared experiences: struggles, discrimination, heartbreak, growth, womanhood, dreams, healing.

Sometimes, it is quiet.

A woman notices your period stain in public and gently whispers to save you from embarrassment.
A stranger gives you a sanitary pad without hesitation.
Someone helps you fix your zip in the restroom.
A woman checks if you got home safely.
Another woman recommends you for an opportunity even when she gains nothing from it.

Sisterhood is solidarity.
It is women choosing to support, protect, uplift, and show kindness to one another whether they know each other personally or not.

It is the understanding that life is already hard enough, and women should not have to go through it alone.

And sometimes, sisterhood looks like four girls sharing a small hostel room in university without realizing they are about to change one another’s lives forever.

Sisterhood is a relationship that feels like home. It makes you feel warm, loved, and above all, it makes you feel seen, heard and valued.

Something 4HerFrika has done effectively is building a strong community of women with shared experiences. 

Last year, we had many hangouts and events across our different campuses to learn, grow and connect. Not only did it birth a space for networking, it brought into our consciousness that as women, we are not alone. There is always going to be a strong community of women  who we can fall back on. 

Life cannot be done alone. Life will throw so many challenges at you, and the only way you can come out stronger from that challenge is if you have a very strong support system. A strong community that would always remind you that you are more what problems you are facing. 

 Find a community that not only supports you, but also feels like home. A community that feels like a warm hug. YOUR community.
